If you ask a person where they go to in order to relax, it is likely that they will mention places like the beach, their favorite restaurant, or a movie. You never hear a person say that they go to the dentist office in order to relax. Why is that? Because for most people, the thought of having any work done on their teeth makes them uncomfortable. There are some people who actually opt to endure the agonizing pain of a toothache as opposed to going to the dentist office. Many people who are so terrified of the dentist know nothing about the beauty that is sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry has the ability to take away some of the anxiety that you might feel about going to the dentist. Sedation dentistry can be used for invasive procedures like a root canal, but it can also be used for something as simple as having your teeth cleaned. Whether or not our team uses sedation dentistry depends on how fearful or nervous you are of the procedure being performed.
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during the dental procedure. It may be referred to as sleep dentistry. While this is a popular term, it does not accurately describe what happens during the procedure. You are usually awake, unless our dentist recommends the use of general anesthesia.
There are different levels of sedation. If our dentist recommends minimal sedation, then you are relaxed, but you are awake and completely conscious throughout the entire procedure. If our dentist recommends a more modern form of sedation, you’re still going to be conscious, but you might slur your words and you might not remember 100 percent of the procedure.
The type of medication our dentist uses to sedate you is also going to vary. For something that’s minimal, you might get laughing gas. This is nitrous oxide that is mixed with oxygen. Our dentist can control the level of sedation you receive. The nice thing about laughing gas is that it wears off relatively fast.
Oral sedation is a pill that you take. You will be given the pill a set amount of time prior to the procedure. The pills can make you really tired, but you still will be awake. Depending on the dosage, oral sedation can be used to induce moderate sedation.
IV sedation is sedation you receive in your veins. And deep sedation will be done with general anesthesia. This is the most powerful form of sedation, and it has the longest side effects.
In addition to the sedation you get, our dentist can give you numbing medication so that there is no serious discomfort throughout the procedure. With sedation dentistry, you can literally go to the dentist office to relax.
