There is no underestimating the importance of having a healthy smile. Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you. If it’s healthy, if it is white, and if it is complete, your smile is going to say positive things about you. Conversely, if your smile is damaged, if you are missing teeth, or if your teeth are stained, it is going to say negative things about you. In times past, there was little that a person could do in order to replace a damaged or missing tooth. They had to live with the damaged tooth or the missing tooth and deal with the social consequences. Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in the past few decades. Now, there are a number of restorative options you can use to replace missing teeth. For example, dental bridges are designed to create a bridge between teeth that have a gap in the middle.
A dental bridge has three separate crowns. Two of the crowns sit on either end of the appliance. These serve as the anchors that attach the bridge to healthy teeth. Then there is the crown in the middle. This crown replaces the missing tooth. If there are no healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth, then it is recommended that a patient gets a dental implant instead.
Dental bridges can be made from a wide range of materials from gold all the way down to fused metals. Having a dental bridge installed usually takes multiple visits to our office. During the first visit, your healthy teeth are going to be reshaped and resized so that the crown can sit over them. Then, a dental mold is made so that the dental bridge can be created. The temporary bridge is then taken out and the custom bridge is put in. Adjustments are made to make sure that the bridge fits well in your mouth. As long as everything fits well, permanent cement is used to keep the bridge in its place.
There are a lot of advantages that come from using dental bridges. First, a bridge gives you the ability to replace your missing tooth. Second, it restores functionality to your mouth. You’re able to eat, talk, smile, and do other things normally as you would with your healthy teeth. Additionally, having a dental bridge holds your teeth in place. It prevents your teeth from shifting, and this could affect your bite. Another benefit of a bridge is that it is permanent. It doesn’t move like dentures.
