Do you experience feelings of anxiety, stress, or fear when thinking about going to the dentist? Are you anxious around needles and/or do you hate shots? At Dentistry First, we offer sedation dentistry to help patients relax and reduce any discomfort they may experience during their dental procedures. Sedation dentistry also allows multiple dental treatments to be performed in a single visit with the patient only feeling like they have been in the office for just a few minutes.

What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, also known as sleep dentistry, uses medication and various levels of sedation to encourage patients to relax during dental procedures. There are several different levels of sedation that can be used for sedation, including minimal sedation, where you are relaxed but fully conscious, moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia, where you are completely unconscious. At Dentistry First, we use two sedation dentistry methods, oral sedation, and intravenous (IV) sedation.
Oral sedation is where a sedative drug is administered in oral tablet form. This sedation method can be combined with nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, which is administered through a mask that is placed over the patient’s nose. The laughing gas helps the patient relax and reduces any discomfort the patient may feel during your treatment. We can control the amount of sedation the patient receives depending on the procedure being performed and the sedation typically wears off quickly.
Intravenous (IV) sedation is administered directly into the blood and is used to completely sedate the patient during the procedure. We have an on-staff licensed Anesthesiologist to assist with this form of sedation and monitor the patient for the duration of the procedure. With IV sedation, patients will have no memory of the procedure due to the deeper level of sedation.
